In brief
Advertising and marketing professionals help businesses understand their customers and reach them — through market research, campaign planning, advertising, brand positioning and marketing analytics. You can work at an advertising or media agency such as Ogilvy, dentsu or Publicis, or in a company’s own marketing team. Entry is usually after a bachelor’s degree, and an MBA or PGDM in marketing is a common way to rise. Pay ranges widely: about ₹2–6 lakh a year to start and ₹6–26 lakh with experience. One warning: in India, many job adverts titled “marketing executive” are really field-sales jobs — read the duties before you apply.

The experienced band is wide because it runs from mid-level specialists to senior brand and marketing heads. Agencies, large consumer brands and metro cities pay at the higher end. Typical India figures, shown as a guide — not a promise.
📣
What does this job really involve?
You work out who a product is for, what will persuade them, and where to reach them — then you plan the campaign, work with writers and designers, run the ads, and measure the results with data.
Picture this: a new snack brand is selling well in Pune but not in Chennai. You dig into the sales data and customer research, find that the flavour message isn’t landing, and help plan a regional campaign in Tamil. Three months later, the numbers move.
💫
Would you enjoy this work?
It may suit you if…
- You enjoy business, marketing and persuasion.
- You like understanding customers and markets.
- You combine creative thinking with analysis.
- You are comfortable working with clients and teams.
Think twice if you want predictable work with little commercial pressure, or dislike targets and having your results measured.
⚠️
Before you apply: what “marketing executive” can mean in India
This is the single most useful thing to know when you start job-hunting:
- Many “marketing executive” adverts are sales jobs. They involve field visits and sales targets, not campaigns or research — which is why Indeed India shows an average of only about ₹2.3 lakh a year for that title, across roughly 1,900 salaries.
- Professional marketing roles pay more. Glassdoor India’s “Marketing Professional” average is about ₹8.5 lakh a year.
- Read the duties, not the title. Campaigns, research, brand or digital marketing = marketing. Door-to-door or counter selling against a target = sales.
In one line: a sales job is a legitimate start for some people — just make sure you are choosing it knowingly.
