HANDS-ON AT SEAMERCHANT NAVYGLOBAL FLEETS
In brief
An Able Seaman (AB) is an experienced deck-crew rating on merchant ships. You steer the vessel, keep lookout and watch, moor and anchor, operate deck and cargo equipment, maintain the deck, and carry out safety and emergency drills. The India route starts after Class 10 with DG Shipping (DGS)-approved pre-sea training and STCW safety courses, then sea service. To become a certified Able Seafarer Deck you need a prior watch-rating certificate plus approved sea service (about 18 months, or 12 with training) and STCW competence. Pay is contract-based and varies by company — roughly ₹3.8-5.8 lakh a year to start, rising to ₹8-20.7 lakh on larger fleets.

"Lakh/yr" = earnings in one year (1 lakh = ₹1,00,000). Seafarer pay is contract-based and varies a lot by company, ship type and rank — Indian and cruise operators differ widely, and totals often include sea allowances. What does this job really involve?
An Able Seaman keeps the deck of a ship running and safe. You take the helm and steer, keep a navigation watch and lookout, moor and anchor the vessel in port, operate winches and cargo gear, chip and paint to fight rust, and take part in fire, lifeboat and safety drills. You work in shifts (watches) around the clock, in all weather, as part of a tight crew.
Picture this: a cargo ship approaches port at night. The AB stands at the helm steering to the pilot's orders, then moves to the forecastle to heave the mooring lines and secure the ship to the berth — steady hands and clear teamwork bringing thousands of tonnes safely alongside. Part sailor, part rigger, part safety hand.

The road ahead: global shipping still runs on skilled crews, so demand for ABs stays steady. Ships are getting more automated, so seafarers who build strong watchkeeping, safety and technical skills — and progress toward officer certificates — have the best long-term careers.

🧭
Ways to get in — the study paths
The route is training-and-certificate based. Here's the common path:
1. Pre-sea deck-rating training · the standard route
Class 10 + medical → DGS-approved pre-sea training for deck ratings + STCW → join a ship as Ordinary Seaman / trainee
DGS approval is what lets you sail on Indian and foreign ships.
2. Sea service → Able Seafarer Deck · certification step
Ordinary Seaman → watch-rating certificate + ~18 months sea service (or 12 with training) → Able Seafarer Deck Certificate of Proficiency
This certificate is what makes you a full, better-paid AB.
3. Grow toward officer · long-term route
Able Seaman → Bosun → further study & exams → Deck Officer / navigating officer
Ratings can study up to become certificated deck officers.
Good to know: maritime training, medical fitness and certification are strictly regulated by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) under the STCW convention. Always train at a DGS-approved institute, and check the current rules before enrolling — requirements can change.

Common questions
Do I need a degree to become an Able Seaman?+
No. You need Class 10, medical fitness, DG Shipping-approved pre-sea training for deck ratings and STCW courses, then sea service and certification. A degree is not required.
Is Able Seaman the same as merchant navy?+
Yes - it is a merchant-navy deck rating. Ratings (like AB) are the skilled crew; officers navigate and command. Ratings can study further to become officers.
What is an Able Seafarer Deck certificate?+
It is the Certificate of Proficiency that makes you a full AB. Indian rules require a watch-rating certificate plus about 18 months of approved sea service (or 12 with approved training) and STCW competence.
How long am I away from home?+
Seafarers usually sign on for contracts of several months at sea, followed by leave on shore. Long spells away from family are part of the life.

It is contract-based and varies widely by company - roughly ₹3.8-5.8 lakh a year to start, rising to ₹8-20.7 lakh on larger foreign-going or cruise fleets. A guide, not a promise.
