In short: you keep a company’s money records correct — recording transactions, preparing accounts and tax filings, checking figures and making sure everything follows the rules. Every business needs one.

In brief

An accountant keeps a business’s financial records accurate and legal. You record income and expenses, reconcile accounts, prepare financial statements, handle GST and tax filings, support audits and help managers understand the numbers. The usual India route is Class 12 (Commerce) → B.Com or BBA → a junior accounting job. You do NOT need to be a Chartered Accountant to work as an accountant — CA is a separate professional qualification you can add later to earn much more. Pay usually starts around ₹1.2-3 lakh a year and grows to ₹3-10.8 lakh with experience, specialisation and bigger employers.

"Lakh/yr" = earnings in one year (1 lakh = ₹1,00,000). Starting pay in small firms is modest; large companies, MNCs and specialised roles (tax, audit, financial reporting) pay considerably more, and adding CA, CMA or ACCA lifts pay sharply. What does this job really involve?

An accountant makes sure every rupee is recorded correctly and every rule is followed. You post entries, reconcile bank and vendor accounts, close the books each month, prepare balance sheets and profit-and-loss statements, file GST and TDS returns, and support auditors. You also explain what the numbers mean to managers who are not from a finance background.

Picture this: at month end the books do not tally by ₹40,000. The accountant traces every entry, finds a supplier invoice booked twice, corrects it and closes the accounts cleanly — keeping the company’s reports and tax filings accurate. Part record-keeper, part detective, part rule-follower.

Accountant vs Chartered Accountant (CA) — what's the difference?

This confuses many students, so here it is simply:

  • Accountant — a job role. A B.Com or BBA graduate can start as an accountant. You keep records, prepare accounts and handle tax filings. No licence needed.
  • Chartered Accountant (CA) — a professional qualification from ICAI (Foundation → Intermediate → Final, plus articleship). It is much harder and takes years, but it lets you sign audits, and it pays far more.
  • Every CA is an accountant; most accountants are not CAs. Many people work as an accountant first and study CA, CMA or ACCA alongside.
In one line: become an accountant to start earning soon after B.Com; add CA if you want the top of this field. Read our Chartered Accountant career page to compare.

Pay, demand & where it's heading

Every company, shop, hospital and startup needs accounting, so jobs are plentiful across India — and GST and compliance work has increased demand. Starting pay is modest, but it rises well with skill and qualifications.

The road ahead: software and AI now do routine data entry and matching, so simple bookkeeping jobs are shrinking. But analysis, tax planning, compliance and advisory work is growing — accountants who learn Excel, ERP systems (SAP/Oracle) and tax rules are more in demand, not less.
📊

A normal day on the job

Office-based, mostly regular hours — busier at month-end, year-end and tax deadlines.

  • Record transactions and reconcile bank and vendor accounts.
  • Prepare invoices, payments and expense reports.
  • Work on GST/TDS filings and monthly closing.
  • Prepare statements and answer auditors' or managers' queries.
🎓

What you'll need to get in

  • Class 12 — Commerce is the natural stream (others can still enter).
  • A B.Com, BBA or related commerce/finance degree.
  • Strong Excel and comfort with accounting software (Tally, SAP, Oracle).
  • Understanding of GST, TDS and basic tax rules.
  • Accuracy and honesty — you handle a company's real money records. No licence needed.
🧭

Ways to get in — the study paths

There's more than one road. Pick the one that fits you:

1. B.Com route · most common
Class 12 Commerce → B.Com (3 yrs) → junior accountant / accounts assistant → Accountant
The standard, low-cost path into a job every company offers.
2. B.Com + CA · highest-paying
Class 12 → B.Com + ICAI CA (Foundation → Intermediate → Final + articleship) → Chartered Accountant
Hard and long, but the top of the accounting profession.
3. CMA / ACCA route · specialised
B.Com → CMA (cost accounting) or ACCA (global) → cost / management / international accounting roles
Good alternatives if CA is not the right fit for you.
4. Skills-first route · fastest to a job
any graduation → Tally / Excel / GST certification → accounts assistant → Accountant
Small firms hire on practical software and GST skill.
Good to know: you can start working after B.Com and study further alongside — many accountants complete CA, CMA or ACCA while employed. Practical skills in Tally, Excel and GST get you hired fastest.
