Accounts Assistant

Other names: Accounting Assistant · Accounting Associate · Accounts Clerk · Accounts Payable Clerk · Accounts Receivable Clerk
In short: you are the first pair of hands in a company’s accounts team — entering bills and payments, checking figures match, chasing missing paperwork and keeping the records tidy so the accountant can close the books.
GOOD FIRST JOBSTART AFTER CLASS 12STEP TO ACCOUNTANT
In brief

An accounts assistant does the everyday work that keeps a company’s books in order: entering invoices and payments, matching bank statements, filing bills, and helping the accountant at month end. You can start straight after Class 12 with a short Tally, Excel or GST course, so it is one of the quickest ways into a finance career. Pay starts around ₹1.1-3 lakh a year and reaches ₹2.5-7 lakh with experience. Be honest with yourself about one thing: software is taking over the routine typing and matching, so the number of these jobs is slowly falling. Treat it as a strong first step towards becoming an Accountant, not a place to stay for 20 years.

"Lakh/yr" = earnings in one year (1 lakh = ₹1,00,000). Small firms pay at the lower end; large companies and outsourcing centres pay more. Openings are still many because people keep leaving the role — but the total number of such jobs is shrinking. Typical India figures, shown as a guide — not a promise. What does this job really involve?

You handle the daily paperwork of money coming in and going out. That means entering bills and receipts into the accounting software, checking supplier invoices against purchase orders, raising invoices for customers, following up on unpaid bills, matching bank statements to the books, and keeping files ready for the accountant and the auditors.

Picture this: a supplier says they were never paid. You open the ledger, find the payment sitting against the wrong invoice number, correct it, share the proof and close the query in ten minutes. Small job, big relief — and the month-end accounts now tally.
💫

Would you enjoy this work?

It may suit you if…

  • You enjoy numbers, records and neat, orderly information.
  • You like clear steps and knowing exactly what "correct" looks like.
  • You notice small mistakes that others miss.
  • You want an office job you can start early, without a long degree.
  • You are happy learning accounting on the job while you study further.
⚠

Be honest: is this job shrinking?

Yes — partly. We would rather tell you straight:

  • What is shrinking: plain data entry and matching. Accounting software now reads invoices, posts entries and reconciles bank statements automatically. International job data expects this group of jobs to fall by about 6% over the next ten years.
  • What is not shrinking: the need for someone who can check the software, spot what looks wrong, handle GST paperwork and talk to suppliers and customers.
  • So what should you do? Take the job, but keep studying. Move up to Accountant within a few years by adding a B.Com, or GST, Tally and Excel skills.
In one line: a great starting job and a real way into finance — just do not plan to stay an accounts assistant forever. See where it leads on our Accountant career page.

Pay, demand & where it's heading

Almost every business needs someone doing this work, so vacancies appear constantly — especially in accounting firms, outsourcing centres and small companies. Pay is modest at the start and improves as you take on GST filings, reconciliations and month-end closing.

The road ahead: routine entry work is being automated, so the number of these jobs is expected to fall. The people who stay in demand are those who move beyond typing — learning GST, reconciliations, ERP systems and reporting, and stepping up to Accountant.
📊

A normal day on the job

Office-based, regular hours — busier at month end, year end and around GST due dates.

  • Enter bills, receipts and payments into Tally or the company’s ERP.
  • Match invoices to purchase orders and chase missing documents.
  • Reconcile bank and supplier accounts.
  • Prepare data for GST returns and help the accountant close the month.
🎓

What you'll need to get in

  • Class 12 — Commerce helps, but other streams are accepted.
  • A short Tally / accounting / GST course is often enough to start.
  • Good Excel and comfortable typing with numbers.
  • Basic understanding of GST, invoices and bank statements.
  • Care and honesty — you handle real company money records. No licence needed.
🧭

Ways to get in — the study paths

There's more than one road. Pick the one that fits you:

1. Short-course route · fastest to a job
Class 12 → Tally / accounting / GST certificate (a few months) → Accounts Assistant
The quickest way to start earning; small firms hire on practical software skill.
2. B.Com route · most common
Class 12 Commerce → B.Com (3 yrs) → Accounts Assistant → Accountant
Costs three more years, but you reach Accountant much faster afterwards.
3. Skill-India route · recognised certificate
Class 12 → NSDC GST Accounts Assistant qualification (NSQF Level 4) → Accounts Assistant
A government-recognised skill certificate built exactly for this job.
4. Earn-and-study route · practical
Accounts Assistant job → B.Com or CMA studied alongside → Accountant → Senior Accountant
Very common in India — you earn while your qualification builds.
Good to know: employers care most about whether you can actually use Tally, Excel and GST. A short, practical course plus a few months of real work often beats a certificate alone.

Common questions

What does an accounts assistant do?+
An accounts assistant handles a company's daily money paperwork: entering bills, receipts and payments into the accounting software, matching invoices to purchase orders, reconciling bank and supplier accounts, chasing unpaid bills and preparing data so the accountant can close the month.
What qualification do I need to become an accounts assistant in India?+
Class 12 plus a short Tally, accounting or GST course is usually enough to start. Many employers prefer a B.Com. India also has an NSDC GST Accounts Assistant qualification at NSQF Level 4 built specifically for this role.
What is the difference between an accounts assistant and an accountant?+
An accounts assistant does the daily entry, matching and filing work. An accountant owns the books: preparing financial statements, handling GST and tax filings, closing the month and answering auditors. Accounts assistant is the junior rung; accountant is the next step up.
Is the accounts assistant job disappearing because of automation?+
It is shrinking, not disappearing. Software now posts entries and reconciles statements automatically, and international job data expects this group of jobs to fall by about 6% over ten years. Openings remain because people move on, so it is still a good first job - but plan to move up to accountant.
What is the salary of an accounts assistant in India?+
Freshers usually start around 1.1-3 lakh a year, rising to about 2.5-7 lakh with experience and larger employers. Adding GST, reconciliation and ERP skills, or a B.Com, lifts pay faster. A guide, not a promise.
