- If your degree is 3 years: a bridge year, or the first year of an MA/MSc in Psychology.
- The RCI-regulated Master in Clinical Psychology (2 years; entrance test and interview) — needed to officially practise.
- Strong listening skills and real empathy.

Ways to get in — the study paths
There's more than one road. Pick the one that fits your goal:
1. The clinical route · to treat patients
Class 10 → Class 11–12 (any stream) → 4-year BA/BSc Psychology → Master in Clinical Psychology (RCI, 2 yrs) → Clinical Psychologist
The full route needed to officially call yourself a Clinical Psychologist.
2. The counselling route · a lighter, quicker start
Class 10 → Class 11–12 (any stream) → BA Psychology → MA Psychology or MSc Counselling → Counsellor
You can help people as a Counsellor sooner — but the "Clinical Psychologist" title still needs the RCI Master in Clinical Psychology.
3. The research & teaching route · for academics
Master's in Psychology → PhD → Psychology Researcher / College Professor
For those who love studying the mind and teaching.
Good to know: you can take any stream in Class 11–12 to study Psychology. But to be called a "Clinical Psychologist" and treat patients in India, the RCI-regulated Master in Clinical Psychology is required. It replaced the M.Phil, whose admissions were allowed only up to the 2025-26 session. (RCI = Rehabilitation Council of India.)

What does a clinical psychologist do day to day in India?+
Most of the day is spent with clients: listening carefully to their concerns, running assessments and simple tests to understand the problem, planning and giving therapy sessions, and keeping careful, private notes - sometimes working with doctors. Clinical psychologists work in hospitals and clinics, schools and colleges, NGOs, companies and private practice.
Which stream do I need in Class 11 & 12?+
Any stream works — Arts, Science or Commerce. You choose Psychology once you reach college.
Do I need a special degree to practise?+
Yes. To be called a "Clinical Psychologist" and treat patients in India, you need an RCI-recognised clinical qualification. This used to be the M.Phil in Clinical Psychology; RCI has replaced it with the 2-year Master in Clinical Psychology, and M.Phil admissions were allowed only up to the 2025-26 session.
How many years does it take?+
Roughly 4 (Bachelor's in Psychology) + 2 (Master in Clinical Psychology) — about 6 years after Class 12. With a 3-year degree, add a bridge year or the first year of a Master's in Psychology first.
What's the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?+
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor (MBBS) who can prescribe medicine. A psychologist uses talking-therapy and assessments, not medicine.
