In short: you care for people living with mental illness — assessing them, giving treatment as prescribed, supporting therapy, and helping families understand what is happening.
GROWING FIELDB.SC THEN M.SC NURSINGGOVT PAY IS HIGHER
In brief
A psychiatric nurse cares for people with mental illness in hospitals, psychiatric institutes and community programmes — assessing patients, giving medicines as prescribed, supporting therapy, managing crises calmly and educating families. Today’s route is B.Sc Nursing, then an M.Sc in Psychiatric Nursing at institutes such as NIMHANS, PGIMER and JIPMER. In February 2024 the Indian Nursing Council also notified a new two-year Nurse Practitioner in Mental Health programme — but we found no institute running it yet, and nurses in India cannot prescribe medicines on their own today. Pay depends heavily on the employer: we estimate ₹4–6 lakh a year to start and ₹6–10 lakh with experience, with government and institute posts well above private ones.

B.Sc + M.Sc Nursing
Both pay bands are estimates, and they are wide on purpose: private psychiatric nursing pays far less than government and institute posts for similar work. “About 7 years” = four years of B.Sc Nursing, a year of work experience, and a two-year M.Sc. “Growing” reflects official US data; India does not publish a forecast for this specialty.
🧠
What does this job really involve?
You spend your shift with people at difficult moments in their lives. That means assessing mental state, giving medicines as prescribed and watching their effects, supporting therapy and group sessions, calming situations before they escalate, keeping detailed records, and helping families understand the illness.
Picture this: a young patient refuses his evening medicine and grows agitated. You don’t argue. You sit with him, listen to what is frightening him, and twenty minutes later he takes it himself. Much of psychiatric nursing is skill with people, not procedures.
💫
Would you enjoy this work?
It may suit you if…
- You are strongly interested in mental health and human behaviour.
- You enjoy working through complex clinical problems.
- You can handle emotionally demanding conversations calmly.
- You value structured clinical responsibility and keep learning.
Think twice if you want low-stress or non-clinical work, or would find severe mental illness and substance-use conditions hard to work with.
💰
The pay gap: government and institutes vs private
Psychiatric nursing pay depends far more on who employs you than on your title:
- Private hospitals and clinics pay least. Salary sites report psychiatric nurse pay of roughly ₹1.6–5 lakh a year, and they disagree with each other.
- Institute posts pay more. AIIMS Rishikesh, for example, advertised a contract Psychiatric Nurse post in 2024 at ₹50,000 a month (about ₹6 lakh a year), requiring an M.Sc in Psychiatric Nursing.
- Government Nursing Officer posts, recruited through AIIMS NORCET, start at 7th Pay Commission Level 7 — a basic of ₹44,900 a month before allowances.
- The M.Sc is what separates you from a general staff nurse for specialist posts.
In one line: if pay matters to you, aim for the M.Sc and for government or institute recruitment — that is where the gap is.

The new “Nurse Practitioner” route — what is real today
You may read about advanced-practice psychiatric nurses who diagnose and prescribe. Here is where India actually stands:
- The route now exists on paper. The Indian Nursing Council’s Nurse Practitioner in Mental Health/Psychiatric Nursing (NPMH) regulations were notified on 16 February 2024 — a two-year, master’s-level clinical residency.
- Entry needs B.Sc Nursing with at least 55%, State Nursing Council registration, clinical experience, and an entrance exam or interview.
- We found no institute running it yet (checked October 2026).
- Prescribing is not allowed yet. The regulations allow a nurse practitioner to prescribe only when nursing councils or state or national law authorise it — and that has not happened.
In one line: plan your career around the M.Sc route that works today, and treat the nurse practitioner route as a possible next step once institutes start offering it.

The road ahead: the official US outlook for advanced psychiatric nursing is growing. India publishes no forecast for the specialty, but the Indian Nursing Council created the new nurse practitioner programme specifically to meet the country’s mental health care needs.

🧭
Ways to get in — the study paths
One main route today, one government route, and one emerging route:
1. Specialist route · today’s main path
Class 12 → B.Sc Nursing (4 yrs) → registration + 1 yr experience → M.Sc Psychiatric Nursing (2 yrs) → psychiatric nurse specialist
Offered at NIMHANS, PGIMER and JIPMER among others, each with its own entrance exam. NIMHANS has only 9 seats, so competition is real.
2. Government route · best paid
B.Sc Nursing → AIIMS NORCET or state exam → Nursing Officer (Pay Level 7) → psychiatry posting / M.Sc later
NORCET is a recruitment exam for nursing jobs, not a psychiatric qualification — the M.Sc still matters for specialist posts.
3. Nurse practitioner route · emerging, not yet running
B.Sc Nursing (55%+) → registration + clinical experience → NPMH residency (2 yrs) → Nurse Practitioner in Mental Health
Notified by the Indian Nursing Council in February 2024. Watch for institutes opening admissions.
