In brief

A paediatrician is a doctor who specialises in children and teenagers — diagnosing and treating illness, tracking growth and development, giving preventive care and vaccinations, and guiding families. It is a long road: Class 12 with science → NEET-UG → MBBS → NEET-PG → MD or DNB Paediatrics, which is roughly nine years after Class 12 and gated by two of India’s toughest exams. Pay starts around ₹6-10 lakh a year and reaches ₹10-30 lakh with experience, though the biggest factor is not experience but how you practise. One thing worth knowing early: Adolescent Medicine is not a separate degree in India — the MD Paediatrics curriculum already covers newborn-to-adolescent care.

The top of the experienced band belongs to established private practice, not to a salaried job. A salaried hospital consultant, a consultant on a fee-share arrangement, and a paediatrician who owns a clinic earn very differently for the same qualification — so treat the upper figure as what is possible, not what is typical. Government hospital posts follow fixed pay scales. Typical India figures, shown as a guide — not a promise.
🧘

What does this job really involve?

You examine children, work out what is wrong, and treat it — often with very little help from the patient, because a two-year-old cannot tell you where it hurts. Alongside illness you track growth and development, run vaccination schedules, spot problems early, and spend a lot of time explaining things calmly to parents who are frightened.

Picture this: a toddler has had a fever for four days. The parents want antibiotics. You examine, order the right test, explain why antibiotics would not help this particular infection, and set clear instructions for when to come back immediately. Half the skill is medical. Half is communication.
💫

Would you enjoy this work?

It may suit you if…

  • You enjoy helping children and teenagers, and communicating with their families.
  • You are strongly interested in medical science, diagnosis and human development.
  • You can handle high responsibility, uncertainty and emotionally difficult situations.
  • You want a medical career that combines science with long-term patient relationships.
⚠

Be honest: it is nine years, and two brutal exams

Before you commit, understand the length and the gates:

  • NEET-UG decides whether you get into MBBS at all. It is one of the most competitive exams in the country.
  • MBBS is 5.5 years including the compulsory internship.
  • NEET-PG then decides whether you get a paediatrics seat. Wanting paediatrics is not enough — your rank decides.
  • MD or DNB Paediatrics is 3 more years, and residency is genuinely hard on your time and health.
  • Total: roughly nine years after Class 12 before independent practice, and you are typically earning a stipend, not a salary, for much of it.
And one common misunderstanding: there is no separate Indian degree called Child and Adolescent Health Specialist. Adolescent Medicine is not a standalone MD or DM specialty in the current NMC postgraduate curriculum — the MD Paediatrics course already covers newborn to adolescent care. If you want that focus, you become a paediatrician first.

Pay, demand & where it is heading

Every city and town needs paediatricians, and demand is steady rather than booming. What changes your income most is the practice model you choose, not the years you have served.

The road ahead: demand is stable. International data projects only about 1 percent growth and notes that a falling child population may limit it over time. In India, paediatric super-specialities — neonatology, paediatric cardiology, paediatric neurology — are where the strongest growth and the highest pay sit.
📊

A normal day on the job

Outpatient clinics, ward rounds and on-call duty — with a heavy share of parent conversations.

  • See children in clinic: examine, diagnose, prescribe, explain.
  • Round on admitted children and review overnight changes.
  • Track growth charts, development milestones and vaccination schedules.
  • Interpret test results and coordinate with other specialists.
🎓

What you will need to get in

  • Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
  • NEET-UG — then MBBS, 5.5 years including internship.
  • NEET-PG — then MD Paediatrics or DNB Paediatrics, 3 years.
  • Registration with the medical council to practise.
  • Stamina and emotional steadiness — sick children and frightened parents, daily.
🧭

Ways to get in — the study path

There is one route, with a choice of postgraduate qualification and an optional super-speciality afterwards:

1. MD Paediatrics route · the standard path
Class 12 PCB → NEET-UG → MBBS (5.5 yrs) → NEET-PG → MD Paediatrics (3 yrs) → Consultant Paediatrician
The most common route. College seats are allotted by NEET-PG rank.
2. DNB Paediatrics route · equally valid
MBBS → NEET-PG → DNB Paediatrics (3 yrs, in an accredited hospital) → Consultant Paediatrician
Trained in large teaching hospitals rather than medical colleges. Widely accepted.
3. Super-speciality route · after paediatrics
MD/DNB Paediatrics → DM or DrNB in Neonatology, Paediatric Cardiology, Paediatric Neurology and similar → super-specialist
Adds three more years, and is where the highest paediatric earnings sit.
4. Adolescent-health focus · not a separate degree
MD/DNB Paediatrics → focused practice and training in adolescent health
India has no standalone Adolescent Medicine MD or DM. The MD Paediatrics curriculum already covers newborn to adolescent care.
Good to know: there is no shortcut and no private route around NEET. Both exams are compulsory, national, and rank-based.

Common questions

How do I become a paediatrician in India?+
Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology, then NEET-UG, then MBBS (five and a half years including internship), then NEET-PG, then MD Paediatrics or DNB Paediatrics (three years). That is roughly nine years of study and training after Class 12 before you practise independently, gated by two of India's most competitive examinations.
How much does a paediatrician earn in India?+
Roughly 6-10 lakh a year early on, rising to about 10-30 lakh with experience. The biggest factor is your practice model: a salaried hospital consultant, a consultant on a fee-share arrangement and the owner of a private clinic earn very differently. The top of the range belongs to established private practice, not to a starting job.
Is Child and Adolescent Health Specialist a separate medical degree in India?+
No. Adolescent Medicine is not a standalone MD or DM specialty in the current National Medical Commission postgraduate curriculum. The NMC MD Paediatrics curriculum explicitly covers care from newborn through to adolescent, so adolescent health in India is a focus taken within paediatrics rather than a separate degree.
What exams do I need to become a paediatrician?+
Two national exams. NEET-UG for admission to MBBS, then NEET-PG for admission to MD or DNB Paediatrics. There is no alternative route into this career in India.
What does a paediatrician do every day?+
Examines and diagnoses children and teenagers, tracks growth and development, gives preventive care and vaccinations, manages illness and medication, interprets test results, and spends a great deal of time explaining things clearly to worried parents.
