You blend software engineering with IT operations — writing scripts and automation, watching systems with monitoring tools, fixing the root cause of failures, and designing services so they don’t break under load. The usual base is a B.Tech/BE in Computer Science or IT (or BCA/B.Sc CS), plus real strength in Linux, coding and cloud. SRE is usually not a first job — most people arrive via software development, DevOps or systems/operations roles. What does this job really involve?
An SRE treats reliability as an engineering problem. You set targets for uptime, build monitoring and alerting, automate repetitive operations, investigate why systems fail, and prevent the same incident from happening twice — working closely with developers, DevOps and infrastructure teams.
Picture this: a payments app crashes every festival-sale night when traffic spikes. The SRE studies the metrics, finds a database that can’t scale, adds automated capacity and better alerts, and writes a “runbook” so any engineer can respond fast — next sale, zero downtime.
